Yurun Cai, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Cai's research has focused on chronic musculoskeletal pain, mobility and falls, physical activity and physical performance associated with cognitive aging in community-dwelling older adults. Dr. Cai had a broad background in aging research, with specific training and expertise in epidemiology and secondary data analysis in multiple large-scale population-based studies. During her doctoral training at the University of Massachusetts Boston, she has led several projects exploring mechanisms underlying the relationship between chronic pain and falls. After graduated from UMB, she obtained her postdoctoral training at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a particular research focus on accelerometer-measured physical activity and cognitive impairment. She has been involved in a NIA R01 grant which is aiming to explore the sensorimotor impairment as preclinical markers of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA). Dr. Cai has developed a novel physical activity metric by analyzing accelerometer-derived continuous signals to predict onset of ADRD. She successfully led several projects and produced peer-reviewed publications from each project. Dr. Cai is dedicated to aging research and her research goal is to help older adults enhance mobility and cognition and maintain functional independence.
