I am a third-year PhD candidate at the University of Central Florida's Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, working in Dr. Masternak's Aging Laboratory. The Masternak Lab is committed to improving the quality of life by investigating the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) on cellular senescence, a biological process linked to age-related diseases. Our research efforts strive to illuminate novel therapies that can minimize the burden of these conditions in hopes of extending healthspan. Specifically, our laboratory seeks to find methods to target and deplete senescent cells to minimize chronic inflammation and to attenuate the progression of age-associated illnesses. Studies from our lab reveal that an emerging class of anti-aging drugs, termed senolytics, confer geroprotective effects. We examine the potential of these pharmaceutical agents to uncover biomedicines that might minimize the effects of aging. By deciphering the multifaceted dynamics of senescence, we hope to advance the understanding of numerous ailments, and improve overall well-being. The vast unknown surrounding senescence continues to ignite my curiosity, with each result a piece of a puzzle to reveal a grander picture. My mentor’s guidance has been invaluable and challenges me to aspire to uncover groundbreaking discoveries, driving genuine change with a firm scientific approach. I am honored to have the chance to contribute to the future of aging research.
