Associate Professor
Penn State College of Medicine
Hershey, Pennsylvania, United States
I studied Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science (U. Lisbon, Portugal). I moved to Helsinki, Finland, to carry out a PhD project, whose was the role of mitochondria in tumor formation and neurodegenerative diseases. After concluding my PhD, and further interested in the roles of mitochondria as signaling platforms, I moved to US, to carry out my postdoctoral training at Yale University, studying mitochondrial signaling in vivo. In 2013 I relocated to Europe, and with the support of a Starting Grant from the European Research Council I started my lab at the University Medical Center Goettingen (Germany). The focus of my lab research is how mitochondria interact with other organelles, particularly lysosomes, peroxisomes and endoplasmic reticulum. In 2020 I relocated my lab to Penn State College of Medicine (Hershey PA), where we keep exploring organelle crosstalk in aging and age-related diseases.
