Dr. Stone is Senior Scientist at CPMC and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco. She is an epidemiologist with over 25 years of experience conducting large-scale multi-center cohort studies and clinical trials exploring the interrelationships between sleep and age-related outcomes, including falls and fractures, cognitive impairment and dementia, cardiovascular disease and mortality. Cohort studies directed by Dr. Stone and her staff at CPMC have collectively measured sleep using wearable devices and in-home monitors in nearly 10,000 older adults. Results from Dr. Stone’s research have resulted in seminal findings, including reporting for the first time that sleep apnea and nocturnal hypoxemia is a risk factor for incident dementia in older women. Findings from Dr. Stone’s sleep studies have been reported in over 200 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Stone leads multi-center randomized trials to test whether treating sleep problems such as insomnia improves health and wellbeing in adults of all ages. She is Principal Investigator for the PCORI-funded multi-center pragmatic trial, Comparative Effectiveness of Zolpidem and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in Rural Adults (COZI). She is also Deputy Editor for the journal SLEEP.
