I hold a PhD in Sociology from UNC Chapel Hill. I am currently a Teaching Professor of Sociology and Program Director for the Gerontology Program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My interests include gerontological pedagogy, experiential learning, the language we use about aging and older adults, ageism, gerontology related micro-credentials, and student professional development. I currently teach Aging and the Lifecourse, Gerontology Senior Seminar, and Current Issues in the Diverse Experiences of Aging. I have previously taught Sociology of Aging, Families and Aging, Research Methods and Aging, among others. I direct a program that includes a gerontology minor, a gerontology concentration in the Interdisciplinary Studies Major, and graduate certificate in gerontology. I am a past president and an Emeritus Fellow of Sigma Phi Omega, the International Academic Honor and Professional Society in Gerontology, an AGHE Fellow, a Victor W. Marshall Fellow of Applied Gerontology in the Southern Gerontological Society, and the recipient of the AGHE Distinguished Faculty Award.
