Dr. Iraida V. Carrion is an Associate Professor, in the School of Social Work and affiliated faculty in the department of anthropology at the University of South Florida.
Her research intersects end of life care, cancer and health decisions among Latinos in the United States and indigenous communities in Northeast India. She also conducts comparative research among older adults in Barcelona, Spain and Latinos in Central Florida. Dr. Carrion has over 50 published peer-reviewed journal articles and four book chapters; has presented in numerous peer-reviewed international, national and state conferences; and is on the editorial boards of Palliative Medicine and Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life & Palliative Care. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Carrion has extensive clinical experience in psychiatric, medical and private practice in New York City, Central Florida and West Texas.
She has also assumed leadership roles as Chair of the MSW program, MSW Director of the MSW for the Sarasota-Manatee program and Bachelor of Social Work program at USF. Additionally, she has developed MSW online courses and Educational Abroad Programs to Northeast India and to Alicante, Granada, Madrid and Barcelona, Spain.
Dr. Carrion is a member of numerous Social Work-related professional organizations and been appointed o serve on two national committees of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Her awards include NASW Social Work Educator of the Year, USF Diversity Award, USF Hispanic Pathway Award, Status of Latino Award and the McKnight Junior Faculty Development Fellowship.
She is Fellow, in the Gerontological Society of America and received the prestigious Puerto Rican Leader award by the Bronx President of New York City. Dr. Carrion was selected a Fulbright Specialist sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and received the USF, Academic Excellence Award.
