As a registered professional nurse, accessibility expert certified by International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), and a director of the Accessible Healthcare Lab at the Univerisity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Choi focuses on the utilization of digital health technologies for people with (dis)/abiliities, specifically for people with visual impairments. Understanding the impacts of disability and chronic conditions on individuals’ quality of life and well-being, she has attempted to maximize their “ability” and “capacity” based on theoretical findings and evidence-based interventions. She is familiar with web and mobile accessibility issues from the perspective of blind users. In addition, through previous research on the health behaviors of people with visual impairments, including blindness, she contributes to understanding the biobehavioral characteristics of visually impaired populations. Currently, she is collaborating with nursing scholars, human-computer interaction (HCI) researchers, information scientists, and the National Federation of the Blind to develop an accessible mobile health app for blind health consumers.
