Dr. James Muruthi is a social gerontologist, family developmentalist, and assistant professor of Counseling and Family Therapy at Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions. His research focuses on naturally occurring social networks, health disparities, successful aging, and health among marginalized populations. His research aims to understand and reduce health disparities among underserved aging minorities and their families. Recently, he is focussed on advancing research on health and aging among Sub-Saharan (SSA) aging people and their families. Dr. Muruthi's long-term career goal is to create innovative interventions while leveraging population-specific strengths and attributes. These interventions will leverage informal social networks, which remain the most relied-upon form of assistance for aging people in the SSA region. Relatedly his work on SSA and individuals seeks to reduce economic insecurity, a key predictor of health among aging individuals and their families. Ultimately, this work will inform government policy to improve health among aging people in the region.
