Dr. Brown is a tenured Associate Professor and MSW Program Chair in the College of Health Sciences, School of Social Work at Jackson State University. He was previously a tenured faculty member in the College of Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities—Department of Social Work at Florida A&M University. He also served on the faculty at Barry University’s Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work, in Miami Shores. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Brown worked as a gerontological social worker for both the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services—Adult Resources Bureau, and the Health Department in the division of Adult and Geriatric Health for the Maryland Department of Human Services. He also worked as a youth case manager in the child welfare arena. Dr. Brown was a Frederick Douglass Doctoral Fellow in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Howard University, a former intern for the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, and AARP. His interests and publications have broadly included aging and diversity issues; ethno-gerontology, health and well-being, HIV/AIDS, cancer health disparities, social work education, and social welfare policy. His initial research explored how the intersections of age, race, spirituality, and sexual orientation impact psychological well-being among Black middle-aged and older HIV positive men. After attending Morehouse College, Dr. Brown completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Florida Memorial University. He earned his MA in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (Student Affairs Administration) from Michigan State University; and both an MSW in Community, Administration, and Policy Practice, with a specialization in social gerontology; and a Ph.D. in social work/social gerontology from Howard University in Washington, DC. He also completed a post-graduate certificate through the Washington DC Area Geriatric Education Center Consortium (WAGECC) and the Center for Aging, Health, and Humanities at George Washington University.
