Dr. Coen is a clinical investigator with a 15-year track record of translational research in the areas of diabetes, aging and skeletal muscle metabolism. Dr. Coen has a broad experience in with exercise training and bed rest interventions to the technical aspects of state-of-the-art human metabolic phenotyping, including glucose clamps, calorimetry, echocardiography, body composition (MRI, DXA), cardiopulmonary fitness testing. The primary focus of his NIH/NIA supported research program is to investigate the mechanisms for the loss of muscle function with aging and diabetes. Dr. Coen’s work to-date has been published in high impact journals including the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Diabetes, and Aging Cell. Dr. Coen plays a leadership role in large multisite consortiums including studies of physical activity following surgery-induced weight loss (R01DK078192) and the Study of Muscle Mobility and Aging (SOMMA, R01AG059416). In addition, Dr. Coen leads the Biospecimens Committee, and serves on the leadership team for SOMMA and the biospecimens committee and recruitment and retention committees for the NIH Common Fund Consortium project MoTrPAC.
