Betsy Kemeny, PhD, CTRS, FDRT, CPG is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Recreational Therapy at Slippery Rock University and American Therapeutic Recreation Association President (2020-21), serving on the ATRA board since 2014. She currently serves as the President of the National Academy of Recreational Therapists. As a Certified Professional Gerontologist, her research interests focus on RT service delivery to older adults. Recently, she investigated the impact of COVID-19 on older adults and the role of the recreational therapists who care for them. Another area of research focus are RT interventions such as animal-assisted interactions and falls prevention interventions for older adults. Prior to graduate work, she worked full-time for more than 25 years with frail older adults in various settings along the care continuum (adult day, assisted living, skilled nursing, hospice). She is currently researching animal-assisted interventions for older adults and the impact of COVID-19 on older adults in LTC. She has authored/co-authored 2 technical reports, 19 peer-review journal articles, a textbook on older adults, and 10 research abstracts. As part of coursework, she facilitates student service-learning programs at local assisted living and skilled nursing facilities and collaborates with Storm Harbor Equestrian Center for programs for disabled veterans. Betsy also partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Aging to develop a virtual service-learning program to link undergraduate students to older adults in the community.This year, she enjoyed working as as stakeholder on the DIGNITY project.
