My academic research training and multi-disciplinary professional experience weave together gerontology, informatics, elder law, and nursing research. My research focus is palliative care for people living with dementia (PLWD), particularly those living in rural nursing homes, and the nursing home workers who provide hands-on direct care to nursing home residents. These interests build on a strong foundation of more than 25 years working with and advocating for older adults, with a particular emphasis on PLWD and their networks of caregivers and communities. I have cared for PLWD in hospice, provided legal representation to elders with limited financial resources, and founded an initiative that explores grandparenting as a conduit for cross-cultural exchange and community-building. The research and community service work I did while earning my Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law focused on legal and policy mechanisms that impact quality of life for vulnerable older adults. Since 2007, serving in multiple roles across NIH, I have coordinated, conducted, published, and presented biomedical and health informatics research related to health data standards, rare disease research, newborn screening, data science, and open science. I am now pursuing my PhD in nursing research, with a concentration in gerontology, informatics, sociotechnical studies, and behavioral and social sciences. I am engaged in ongoing research related to 1) access to and use of palliative care for older adults living in nursing homes, 2) expertise and perspectives from hands on direct workers for older adults, 3) use of population datasets to advance caregiving science, and 4) psychoeducational training interventions with active engagement for family caregivers.
