Farah Acher Kaiksow, MD, MPP is an Assisant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine within the Department of Medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. As a practicing hospitalist, she provides acute care to adult patients in inpatient settings at the VA and UW Health hospitals. She also holds a graduate degree in public policy and has a long-standing interest in health equity. Her current research focuses the impact of hospitalizatoins patients who are incarcerated. This interest in the health of incarcerated individuals grew out of clinical experiences caring for justice-involved patients in the hospital. Dr. Kaiksow quickly recognized that hospital-acquired delirium was one of the most under-recognized and under-studied conditions in this already vulnerable population. Incarcerated individuals experience accelerated aging, which likely increases their risk of geriatric diseases at younger ages that would normally be expected. This population also faces incarceration-specific inpatient care practices; many of these practices, such as frequent use of restraints and limited opportunities for interaction with medical staff, are deliriogenic. Through her research, Dr. Kaiksow hopes to influence the policies that guide the care of incarcerated patients in the hospital in order to reduce their risk of delirium.
