Reducing energy intake in the absence of malnutrition (caloric restriction) has long been known as the most robust and reproducible way to experimentally increase lifespan in laboratory models. However, our understanding of which metabolites and nutrient-sensing pathways interact with longevity and where they act remains rudimentary, and in many cases, controversial. This session will explore recent findings linking changes in metabolites to the aging process and to organismal health.

Learning Objectives:

  • At the conclusion of the session, attendees will be able to describe the difference between measurements of steady-state metabolite concentrations vs. flux.
  • As a result of this session, attendees will be able to formulate hypotheses about changes in NAD+ concentrations and flux during aging and design experiments to test them.
  • Attendees will further be able to describe examples of microbial metabolism contributing to the uptake and processing of orally administered metabolites.
