Atiya Mahmood, PhD, is a Professor in the Gerontology Department at the Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver, Canada. Her Ph.D. is in Architecture with a focus on environment-behaviour studies. Her research focuses in several distinct, yet related areas, within the general area of aging, health and environment. These are: a) Neighbourhood urban design, mobility and participation of older adults and persons with mobility limitations, sensory and cognitive disabilities; b) Social participation and civic engagement in multi-unit housing; c) Housing insecurity, homelessness and aging in the right place; Her methodological expertise includes qualitative, mixed-method and community-based participatory research.
