Michael R. Desjardins, PhD, MA (he/him/his)

Dr. Michael R. Desjardins is an Assistant Scientist and core faculty member in the Spatial Science for Public Health Center and Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His general research interests are medical geography, spatial epidemiology, spatial statistics and modeling, geostatistics, geovisulization, mixed-methods, and longitudinal analysis. Recently, Dr. Desjardins has applied these research areas to study COVID-19, arboviruses, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, cholera, cancer accessibility and utilization, mental health and suicide, substance abuse, ageing, childhood health, residential mobility, among others. His research has been and is currently funded by numerous intramural and extramural sources, including the NSF, NIH, and the Maryland Department of Health. Dr. Desjardins also co-teaches four courses at Hopkins, including Fundamentals of GIS, Spatial Data Technologies, Spatial Statistics, and Spatial Design and Application; along with teaching numerous independent studies, guest lectures, and advising master's and doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows.

Dr. Desjardins is currently the Special Issues Editor for Health & Place, editorial boards for Wellbeing, Space and Society, and Cartography and Geographic Information Science (CaGIS). He is also the guest editor for two special issues in the Journal of Maps and Health & Place; co-editor for a Springer Book on Longitudinal Analysis in Geospatial Health and Hazard Studies; and also serves on the organizing committee for the upcoming 2024 International Medical Geography Sympsoium; and the United States representative for the International Geographical Union's Commission on Health and Environment.

He earned is BA in geography and GIS certificate from Keene State College (2014); MA in geographic information science and technology (2016) and PhD in geography (2019) from UNC Charlotte under Dr. Eric Delmelle. Dr. Desjardins also completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in epidemiology and spatial statistics in 2022 under Dr. Frank Curriero at Johns Hopkins and has since transitioned to full-time faculty.
