Ishan C. Williams, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, School of Nursing. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her current research focuses on older adults with cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease/dementia and chronic illnesses, and the health and well-being of family caregivers. Her research further concentrates on understanding the health care needs of older adults and their family caregivers within social, cultural, and geographical contexts while focusing on recruitment and health care equity among older adults and their family caregivers. With colleagues from UVA, Dr. Williams is also studying the impact of stigma among dementia caregivers and vascular risk factors and cognition among older African American adults living in rural communities. Given her research is primarily community-based, finding the unique balance of applying research to practice has been a common theme across her career. As a family gerontologist, her goal is to consistently highlight the need for inclusivity and diverse representation in gerontological education and research. Her teaching also centers on developing curriculum objectives relevant for cultural sensitivity and adaptation in the delivery of health care for all across the life course.
