I have a broad background in informatics, gerontology, instrument development, and quality improvement. I have specialized experience in long-term post-acute care, technology implementation, and Minimum Data Set derived resident outcomes. I am a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, American College of Medical Informatics, and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. I am leading a research team that has ongoing eight years of data comparing nationally, NH minimum data set quality measurements, health deficiencies, and health information technology (HIT) maturity. With the assistance of a large national team of NH administrators I have developed a valid and reliable instrument called the NH HIT maturity and stage model to measure NH HIT maturity among seven stages (i.e. stage 0 nonexistent HIT or EHR to stage 6 representing a NH providing secure and protected means for residents and their designees to access clinical data). The first instrument of its kind to measure trends in HIT adoption as part of NH structure and clinical processes. As PI, I have used the survey in two concurrent national R01 studies from 2013-2022 funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. I am currently a PI on a third study funded by the National Institutes of Aging assessing how digital maturity impacts NH care environments where nurse practitioners work, and outcomes of residents with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias. I have published widely in national/international journals including nursing, engineering, gerontology, health services research, and quality improvement. I currently have over 120 peer reviewed publications including the first book for HIT implementation in long term care titled: An Introduction to Clinical Health Information Technology for Long Term/Post-Acute Care Healthcare, 2018. I have participated as Chair or team member of 23 PhD committees and have had 1 post-doc complete work on aging, technology, and quality.
