Lisa J. Lehmberg is Professor of Music Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a Ph.D. degree in music education from the University of South Florida, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the University of Illinois. Lisa has extensive experience as a PreK-12 school music specialist, including substantial work with English Language Learners and students with disabilities. She is certified in the Orff Schulwerk approach to general music education. Lisa’s teaching specialties include music education research, music and lifelong learning, global perspectives on music education, elementary general music methods and practicum seminar.
Lisa’s research focuses on older adult participation in music and quality of life. Her latest book (2023, co-authored with C. Victor Fung, published by Cambridge University Press) is titled Music, Senior Centers, and Quality of Life. Other recent books include Meanings of Music Participation: Scenarios from the United States (2022, co-edited with C. Victor Fung, published by Routledge), and Music for Life: Music Participation and Quality of Life of Senior Citizens (2016, co-authored with C. Victor Fung, published in English by Oxford University Press and in Chinese translation by Shanghai Educational Publishing House).
Lisa currently serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Music Education and the Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction and is a member of the Publications Committee of the International Society for Music Education. She has also served on the editorial board of The Orff Echo. Lisa has given research and practice-based presentations at International Society for Music Education world conferences; national conferences of the National Association for Music Education, American Society on Aging, College Music Society/Association for Technology in Music Instruction; National Multicultural Music Symposia; and state music educator association conferences in Florida, New England, and throughout the Midwest.
