Amy Vogelsmeier, PhD, RN, FAAN is an Associate Professor in the Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri and a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She received her PhD in nursing and health systems in 2008 from the University of Missouri. Dr. Vogelsmeier has over 30 years of practice experience in acute and long term care settings with a focus in leadership and quality improvement. Dr. Vogelsmeier is a health services researcher with an emphasis on improving care delivery systems. Her research includes a focus on the RN and APRN role as an influence to nursing home resident safety and on implementation to improve outcomes among older adults. Dr. Vogelsmeier is co-investigator on the ASSETs for AIP team, a demonstration project to test an intervention to deliver sensor-enhanced care coordination to community dwelling older and disabled adults residing in Missouri. Dr. Vogelsmeier is also a multi-principal investigator on a four-year Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) study to develop knowledge and recommendations to improve nursing home management of respiratory infections outbreaks, such as COVID-19. Most recently, she served as co-investigator and practice co-lead for the Missouri Quality Initiative, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations demonstration project funded over eight years (2012-2020) with the goal to reduce avoidable hospitalizations for nursing home residents using embedded APRNs to influence care delivery. She currently serves as a consultant and patient safety analyst for the Center for Patient Safety and serves as an expert advisory panel member for AHRQ’s Patient Safety Network (PSNetwork). Dr. Vogelsmeier has also served on panels with the American Academy of Nursing, the National Council State Boards of Nursing, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
