Melissa Ferguson is a doctoral student in the Human Development and Family Studies department at Utah State University. Melissa's research is guided by a contextual-developmental and inclusive approach to healthy sexual development and healthy sexual relationships. She studies healthy sexual relationships in various contexts (e.g., LGBTQ+ couple and family relationships, sexual satisfaction in long-term relationships, religious influences on sexuality) and their development across the lifespan (e.g., parent-child sexual communication, formal sex education, partner sexual communication, medical provider sex education and communication). Melissa's work is centered in strengths-based and sex positive approaches to the investigation of lived experiences and observed interactions to guide evidence-based formation of programs, which are intended to be preventative and translational in nature. This means to prevent problems before they occur, promote healthy sexual relationships and healthy sexuality development, and to be applied in real life, through programming being available and accessible for home-based and community level education.
